See… he’s not allowed to “not like” foods. I mean, technically, he is… but I don’t take it well. I feel the need to take up that banner of that food and convince him that he really does enjoy said food, if only he had it prepared the right way, or in the right circumstances, or from the right source. It starts innocently enough. He says, “You know, I’ve never been a big <insert food/ingredient here> fan. I just don’t like it.” Me: “WHAT?!?!”

I love the whole concept of spinach salad with bacon dressing. It strikes just the right balance of healthy and splurge-worthy. Loaded up with vitamin-packed spinach, mushrooms, and red onion, and some protein-righ eggs, this salad makes for a healthy lunch option. Add in some warm, rich dressing and big crumbles of bacon and you have a lunch option that you actually want to eat. Win-win.
You may have noticed that I don’t have a whole lot of breakfast recipes around here. It’s not that I have anything against breakfast, or that I don’t like to cook it. It is true, however, that I have no interest in things like blueberry cheesecake stuffed french toast or cinnamon roll pancakes with cream cheese-butter-maple-syrup icing. It’s been a particularly frigid winter in the Chicago area, with lots of days spent inside drinking tea and dreaming of summer. A frequently recurring daydream around here involves the smell of burgers on the grill with a cold beer in hand, lounging around in the backyard. Unfortunately, burgers on the grill are just not going to happen anytime soon. When we start getting a little forlorn at this prospect, these burgers come to the rescue. They’re easy to put together without the help of a charcoal grill, and are so flippin’ delicious that it blows memories of Labor Day barbecues away. Continue reading
Is there anyone who doesn’t love a pretzel roll? To me, the perfect pretzel roll is flavorful, light and fluffy on the inside, with a dark brown, chewy (but not crisp) crust, and a hefty sprinkle of salt on top. All the best parts of a really good pretzel, but with the versatility and unfussiness of a bun or roll. They’re easy enough to find in a grocery store these days, but with a few exceptions, they are pretty unremarkable. Some are too dense, while others are all fluff with no chew to the crust. Nothing disappoints like the promise of a delicious pretzel roll unfulfilled. Continue reading
