Chocolate Chunk Cookies with Brown Butter and Pecans

Chocolate Chunk Cookies with Brown Butter and Pecans

This isn’t just a chocolate chip cookie.

Let me rephrase that.  Saying just a chocolate chip cookie is somewhat disparaging to chocolate chip cookies.  A chocolate chip cookie can be the epitome of what a cookie should be.  So I’ll say it this way: This isn’t your typical chocolate chip cookie.  This cookie is so chock full of chocolate, pecans, and flecks of browned butter that it was all I could do to stop myself from shoving teaspoonfuls of the batter into my already chocolate-stained mouth.  (Ok, I didn’t stop myself. Lots of dough was harmed in the making of these cookies.) Continue reading

Mango Lassi Frozen Yogurt

Mango Lassi Frozen YogurtBefore I even started out on this recipe, it had several things going against it.  Three strikes.

DSC_0276

First, it’s Mango Lassi frozen yogurt.  Lassis have never sounded in the least bit appealing to me.  I’ve been to India, and frankly, the idea of stopping at a roadside stand to bake in the sun while drinking a savory yogurt drink would never have crossed my mind. I’m sure I’m wrong about lassis- I hope I am.  But, yeah, they’re not exactly my favorite way to cool down on a hot summer day. Continue reading

The Ultimate Pumpkin Pie

I’m completely aware that I’m not exactly thinking outside of the box by giving you a pumpkin pie a few days before Thanksgiving.  But why would I tell you about something that wouldn’t be for Thanksgiving, when you most likely won’t want to look at food for a week after such a gluttonous feast?  Might as well get in a recipe that’s helpful before the, “I’m never eating again!” mantras begin.

And this isn’t just any old pumpkin pie.  You see, it’s the ultimate pumpkin pie.  At first glance, it doesn’t look too crazy, which is what I like about it.  It’s not pumpkin cheesecake with a gingersnap crust, or pumpkin creme brulee tart.  It’s pumpkin pie- just really good pumpkin pie. Applesauce Spice Cake with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting

As I was saying last week, something about fall just makes it so much fun to spend time in the kitchen.  Every recipe I see makes me want to give it a try.  All the warm spices, harvest veggies, and hearty soups and stews make me feel particularly joyful when I step into the kitchen.  However, there is one thing that I’m decidedly not as crazy about.  At least not as crazy as the rest of the world, apparently. Peach Upside-Down Cake

Well, friends, summer is reaching its end.  All the kiddos are back in school, I actually felt something resembling a chill while sitting outside the other night, and I’m starting to play the annual game of what I like to call, “Bug hubby to go apple-picking with me until he caves.” Psh.  As if he doesn’t actually love it.

Now, I realize this recipe is somewhat rude.  See, I made it a few weeks ago, when we were still getting very lovely peaches from the farmers market.  And now, well… the tide of peaches has kind of ebbed.  But I’m still seeing them in the grocery store, so it’s not quite as rude of me as it would be if I shared this recipe with you in, let’s say, February.  Trust me, this cake is worth finding the peaches for.
