Chocolate Chunk Cookies with Brown Butter and Pecans

Chocolate Chunk Cookies with Brown Butter and Pecans

This isn’t just a chocolate chip cookie.

Let me rephrase that.  Saying just a chocolate chip cookie is somewhat disparaging to chocolate chip cookies.  A chocolate chip cookie can be the epitome of what a cookie should be.  So I’ll say it this way: This isn’t your typical chocolate chip cookie.  This cookie is so chock full of chocolate, pecans, and flecks of browned butter that it was all I could do to stop myself from shoving teaspoonfuls of the batter into my already chocolate-stained mouth.  (Ok, I didn’t stop myself. Lots of dough was harmed in the making of these cookies.) Continue reading

Pretzel Rolls

Pretzel RollsIs there anyone who doesn’t love a pretzel roll? To me, the perfect pretzel roll is flavorful, light and fluffy on the inside, with a dark brown, chewy (but not crisp) crust, and a hefty sprinkle of salt on top.  All the best parts of a really good pretzel, but with the versatility and unfussiness of a bun or roll.  They’re easy enough to find in a grocery store these days, but with a few exceptions, they are pretty unremarkable.  Some are too dense, while others are all fluff with no chew to the crust.  Nothing disappoints like the promise of a delicious pretzel roll unfulfilled. Earl Grey Truffles

Earl Grey TrufflesMmm… is there anything better than a hot cup of earl grey tea on a cold day?  Oh wait… there is… and it’s that cup of tea, plus chocolate and cream and cocoa.  I’m not even a chocolate person (I know, the horror!) and I seriously love these.  They are rich and decadent, but also subtle and perfectly balanced.  In a season when I tend to go overboard and binge on other sweets, I find myself completely satisfied savoring just one of these.  Ok, maybe two.  Which is good, because my whole point in making these was to make some tasty homemade gifts for people.  But who could blame me for sneaking just a few?

Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars with Walnut Streusel

Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars with Walnut StreuselIt’s been brought to my attention (by my completely appalled friends), that some people think I might be a pumpkin hater because I posted a while back that I was sick of hearing about pumpkin spice lattes while there were still tomatoes and eggplants at the farmers’ markets. Well.  I hope we can clear that up today. Continue reading

Quick and Easy Hamburger Buns

Quick Homemade Hamburger Buns

I’m going to apologize in advance.  This would have been a better post to share in May, when there was a whole season of burger and hot dog eating ahead of us.  But at least I got it in before the mother of all backyard-barbecue holidays, Labor Day.  I will warn you though- once you start making your own hamburger and hot dog buns, you won’t want to stop.  You won’t be content with those mushy, smushable, sawdust things you are forced to pay 2 bucks for at the grocery store.  Not when you know that you could make your own quicker than you can whip up a batch of potato salad.
